BBX & Musion 3D debut the world’s first 5G hologram concert featuring the globally acclaimed pianist Lang Lang, held at El Liceu, Barcelona’s oldest operating theatre, as part of Ericsson’s gifted centenary celebration for Telefónica.

Telefónica’s 100th anniversary marked a significant milestone in the telecommunications industry. Ericsson, seeking to commemorate this occasion, envisioned a celebration that not only honoured Telefónica’s legacy but also showcased the future of telecommunications technology, particularly the transformative power of 5G.

Client Vision

The challenge was to create a visually stunning representation of 5G technology that would captivate the audience and highlight its potential. This required a seamless integration of high calibre event production technology with artistic performance.

Solution

Musion 3D, renowned for their expertise in spectacular holographic technology, was commissioned for the event thanks to their patented technology which truly uncaps potential by providing indistinguishable immersive 3D images. They assembled a team of experts including BBX Media to tackle the seemingly impossible task. BBX Media played a pivotal role, providing technical genius and logistical support. Key elements of the solution included:

  • Utilisation of Musion 3D’s holographic technology to project a lifelike hologram of renowned pianist Lang Lang onto the stage.
  • Integration of a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) over IP solution to transmit data from a Roland piano to a Steinway Spirio autonomous piano.
  • Incorporation of PTZ cameras mounted on trusses to capture the performance from multiple angles.
  • Video control & display of hologrammed hands on an LED screen synchronised with Lang Lang’s performance on the real piano.

Multiple cameras meticulously captured every nuance of Lang Lang’s performance to create his holographic twin, transmitting the footage in stunning 4K resolution. Leveraging the power of 5G, the network facilitated real-time data upload while minimising disruptions such as jitter and connectivity loss, thanks to its ultra-low latency capabilities.

The 5G standalone infrastructure ensured the seamless transportation of data streams, guaranteeing critical data packets for synchronised video and audio delivery, as well as supporting thousands of simultaneous connections and enabling fully immersive viewer interactions.

Ericsson’s bespoke private 5G network solution further bolstered the event’s security and reliability, offering a dual-mode 5G core solution operated on a single server.
